No evidence has yet been provided on alleged casualties as a result of Russian airstrikes in Syria, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday, commenting on a statement made by German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On Monday, Angela Merkel said that she was "horrified by the suffering" allegedly caused by Russia's airstrikes in Syria.

The accusations come as the the Syrian government forces managed to cut off terrorists’ supply routes from Turkey in northern Aleppo last week. The troops, with support from the local militias, broke through the sieges in the towns of Nubl and Zahraa. Now the government army aims to gain control of the Syria-Turkey border.

“In regard to Chancellor Merkel’s claims of alleged casualties in Russian airstrikes in Syria, one needs to take into account that regardless of the huge number of similar statements, someone has yet to produce a single shred of evidence that would make this information trustworthy,” Peskov told journalists.

The Russian Defense Ministry has repeatedly said that claims of civilian casualties in Russia's airstrikes in Syria are aimed to distract the international community from the four-year Syrian civil war, which had caused multiple civilian casualties.

Earlier, US Operation Inherent Resolve spokesman Col. Steve Warren said that he cannot confirm the the Russian Air Force airstrikes on civilian oil tankers in Syria.
