MOSCOW (Sputnik) — High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs Federica Mogherini plans to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during the upcoming Munich Security Conference, EU Ambassador to Russia Vygaudas Usackas said.
"Yes we expect that the bilateral meeting to take place within the framework of the conference in Munich," Usackas told RIA Novosti, when asked about the possibility of a meeting between Lavrov and Mogherini.
Both the EU foreign policy chief and the Russian foreign minister are engaged in multilateral international negotiations on a wide range of issues, including the Ukraine crisis, a political settlement in Libya and the resumption of Israel-Palestine talks.
Between February 12 and 14, more than 20 heads of state and dozens of other officials from around the world are set to meet at the Munich Security Conference.
The Munich Security Conference is an international, nongovernmental, independent conference for discussing major security issues. Founded in 1962 to facilitate consultations between NATO member countries, it now involves representatives from Central and Eastern Europe, South Asia, and the Middle East, as well as former Soviet states.
