BRUSSELS (Sputnik) — NATO is implementing the biggest increase in bloc's defense in a post-Cold War period, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.
On February 10-11, a meeting of NATO ministers of defense is taking place in Brussels.
"We are implementing the most significant boost to our collective defence since the end of the Cold War," Stoltenberg said, as quoted by the official NATO website.
He added that after many years of substantial reductions among European Allies and Canada, defense cuts have practically stopped.
Stoltenberg also welcomed the US plans to increase defense spending and military presence in Europe.
The US-led military alliance has been stepping up military presence in Europe since 2014. It has justified pulling troops and hardware to Eastern European countries by Russia’s alleged role in the Ukrainian crisis.
