MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The creation of a broad anti-terrorism front under the auspices of the United Nations is a priority of Russia's foreign policy, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

"We are now focusing on international mobilization to repel the terrorist aggression and the creation of a broad anti-terrorism front on the basis of international law and under UN auspices for this purpose," Lavrov said.

Russian Aerospace Forces' airstrikes against terrorist targets is Syria are due to ensure the defeat of the Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) militant group, the Nusra Front and other extremist groups, the minister added.

According to Lavrov, Russia believes that defeating terrorism, as well as solving any problem, is impossible by military means alone, as a political solution is also necessary, with the economic rehabilitation of all affected states.

Earlier in February, the foreign minister said that the Russian military campaign in Syria would continue until terrorist groups were defeated. The primary targets are the Islamic State and Nusra Front militant groups, designated as terrorist organizations by and outlawed in Syria, Russia, and several other countries.
