"I hope that, building on the success of the negotiations on Iran’s nuclear issue and the UN resolution on Syria, all participants in the negotiation process will be able to come to a common understanding that would end the years of bloodshed in Syria, stop the refugee flow and contribute to the process of political settlement in Syria," Usackas told RIA Novosti in an interview.
The EU ambassador noted that military operations in Syria would not resolve the Syrian war without a political process and diplomatic efforts.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting multiple opposition factions and extremist groups.
The UN Security Council Resolution 2254, passed in December, reaffirms the goals of previous agreements to end the bombardment of civilians in Syria, bring the entire spectrum of political groups in the crisis-torn country to the negotiating table and promote a lasting political resolution of the crisis.
