TALLINN (Sputnik) — Estonia is planning to close some embassies abroad to cut costs, the country’s Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand said Thursday.
"We have to think seriously about closing embassies. So far we have only opened embassies, but given the current international situation, the state of financial resources and personnel available to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we understand that we can no longer maintain such a network of embassies," Kaljurand said in the local parliament.
The minister added that the embassies to be closed will be determined by the ministry during the consultations with the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs and members of the government.
Currently, Estonian embassies and consulates operate in 97 countries around the world.
