"The practice of conducting such unannounced inspections should be continued. We see that this practice is well-proven, it allows us to gradually increase the combat readiness of the army and navy, as well as to coordinate actions among units and subdivisions," Putin said during a video conference with commanders of the Russian army's military districts on exercises in the Southern Military District and Crimea.
Units of the Southern Military District, with the participation of separate units of the Airborne Troops and military-transport aviation, started the snap exercises on Monday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday that up to 8,500 personnel, some 900 units of military equipment, about 50 combat ships, as well as up to 200 aircraft and helicopters, were taking part in the drills.
