Executive Secretary of the CTBT Organization Lassina Zerbo said that Russia is a "good student" of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and has always given its support to the accord.

MUNICH (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova — Russia is a "good student" of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and has always given its support to the accord, Executive Secretary of the CTBT Organization Lassina Zerbo told Sputnik on Friday.

"Russia is a good student of this treaty, because Russia has always shown its full commitment to the CTBT, it's support to the built up of the international monitoring system, it's support to organization and its support to me personally in helping me to pursue the remaining ratification to prepare for the energy into force," Zerbo said.

All five nuclear weapons states as recognized by the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons — the United States, China, Russia, France and the United Kingdom, are signatories of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.

The accord's entry into force would create a legally binding prohibition on nuclear explosive tests for all its parties after China, Egypt, India, Iran, Israel, North Korea, Pakistan and the United States ratified it.

Zerbo also stressed Russia’s commitment to the CTBT, saying he discussed this in his third meeting in two years with Lavrov, which took place earlier in the day in Munich.

"He [Lavrov] has always been keen to discuss with me the ways to put forward to see how we can unlock the entry into force situation, how together with Russian leadership we can work towards encouraging the remaining eight countries to join the ratification and in order to proceed with that matter which is twenty years pending," Zerbo said.
