MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Cairo disagrees with the possible partition of Syria and will never agree to such a scenario, Egyptian Ambassador to Russia Mohammed Badri said Friday.
"We do not accept, we will not accept and will never agree with Syria's partition. We advocate the establishment of an interim government, whose future should be defined by the Syrian nation itself," Badri said during a round-table conference at the Rossiya Segodnya International Information Agency.
He added that Cairo backs the struggle against terrorism in Syria as well as supporting Syrian political institutions.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the army loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting several opposition factions and militant groups.
Numerous militant organizations such as Islamic State, which is outlawed in many countries, including Russia and the United States, and ethnic groups such as the Kurds, have seized different parts of the country where they have created their own political institutions.
