MUNICH (Sputnik) – Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi vowed on Friday to eradicate the Islamic State jihadist group (ISIL or Daesh in Arabic) this year.
"We intend this year to make it the final year and the last year for the existence of Daesh in Iraq," Abadi said at the 52nd Munich Security Conference.
The task ahead is to restore damaged areas amid plummeting global oil prices, on which 90 percent of Iraq’s GDP depends, Abadi added.
"We liberated Tikrit, we liberated Ramadi as well," he stressed, hailing the national forces’ anti-IS efforts a "success story" last year.
Abadi argued that Daesh continues to lose ground in Iraq.
