"There is a need for the use of military force to make and to enforce peace. It is sad that it is so, but it is so. And I will admit, that we are also dealing with the abuse of use of military force to lock conflict resolution and settlement," Ischinger said in a statement.
This year’s MSC took place on February 12-14. The 2016 conference focused on conflict prevention as well as the revision of arrangements dealing with this issue. The ongoing refugee crisis, prosperity prospects, as well as persisting problems in several states were also high on the agenda.
The conflict in Syria was also discussed during the conference. The civil war, which started in 2011, left millions of people displaced and hundreds of thousands were killed.
Several international forces are also involved in the conflict. A US-led coalition has been launching airstrikes against terrorist positions in Syria since 2014. Russia launched a counterterrorist aerial campaign in the country on the request of the Damascus authorities last September.
