MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to The Telegraph newspaper, the rally was peaceful at first, but a group of activists tried to break through the police lines to enter the construction site. The protesters dispersed after the riot police used stun grenades and tear gas.
Currently, Greece is implementing a program of construction of five centers for hosting and registering refugees on country's islands of Chios, Kos, Leros, Lesbos and Samos.
Riot police has been deployed in Kos since February 5 and will remain deployed there until the center has been completed.
Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with millions of refugees fleeing conflict-torn countries of the Middle East and North Africa in search of asylum in stable and wealthy EU states. Most refugees travel from Turkey to the Greek islands before continuing onward to mainland Europe.
