“UNRWA continued food distribution in the Damascus neighbourhood of Yalda for a second consecutive day, having had no substantial access since June last year,” agency spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement.
He estimated that 1,200 families across Yalda, Babila, Beit Saham and Yarmouk received food parcels containing a range of commodities.
Major powers of the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) agreed in Munich on February 11 to speed up humanitarian access to besieged areas across Syria ahead of a “cessation of hostilities” anticipated this week.
“The community have indicated that their greatest needs include food, non-food items (particularly winter blankets and clothing), access to clean water and to healthcare,” Gunness stressed.
He added that UNRWA planned to reach 6,000 families by the end of the week.
