MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier this week, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the bloc is planning to open an office in the Syrian capital to provide humanitarian aid to the conflict-torn country.
"Regarding the humanitarian office in Damascus, we hope to scale up operational capacity as soon as possible to best support victims of the conflict all over Syria," the official said.
The official, who wished to remain anonymous, stressed that the European Union would continue to deliver humanitarian aid to Syrians in need of lifesaving assistance, inside Syria and in neighboring countries, as the leading donor to the international response to the crisis.
Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the army loyal to President Bashar Assad fighting several opposition factions and militant organizations, including Daesh, which is banned in Russia and a number of other countries.
The armed conflict has led to a massive humanitarian crisis, with millions of people forced to flee the country.
