The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered food convoys as part of humanitarian assistance to over 80,000 people living in five besieged Syrian towns, according to a WFP press release.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — WFP’s Syria Country Director Jakob Kern appealed in the press release to all parties to the conflict "to continue facilitating full, sustained and unimpeded access to people in need across the country."

"The convoys arrived Wednesday night to Moadamiyeh, Zabadani and Madaya in Rural Damascus and Foah and Kefraya in Rural Idlib. Each family in the five locations received two bags of wheat flour from WFP and other basic food items," the press release read.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting a number of opposition factions and radical Islamist groups.

Last week, members of the International Syria Support Group agreed to a cessation of hostilities to ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the besieged Syrian towns and areas.

On Tuesday, the United Nations announced the planned deliveries to the besieged areas, and the move was approved by the Syrian government. Dozens of trucks left Damascus on Wednesday for the towns in need.
