The Medecins Sans Frontieres aid agency calculated over 7,000 causalities and over 150,000 wounded in war torn Syria in 2015, a new report from the agency revealed.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF, also known as Doctors Without Borders) aid agency recorded over 7,000 causalities and over 150,000 wounded in war-ravaged Syria in 2015, a new report from the agency revealed.

"In total: MSF-supported facilities alone have recorded 7,009 dead, 154,647 wounded; 30-40 % being women and children. In besieged zones in Damascus region: MSF recorded 1,400 dead and more than 36,000 wounded," the report reads.

According to MSF, the figures are based on medical reports and data from 70 clinics and hospitals in Syria supported by the agency.

MSF notes that a total of 94 aerial and shelling attacks hit MSF-suppported facilities, 12 of which resulted in their total destruction.

"… after five years of war, the health infrastructure in Syria has been decimated, with a large number of medical facilities closed or destroyed as a result of indiscriminate violence and their staff fleeing to safety or being injured or killed," the report reads.

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011, with the army loyal to Assad fighting several opposition factions and militant groups. The conflict has significantly damaged the country's economy and caused a humanitarian disaster.
