Cameron Facing Stiff Opposition as Brexit Talks Go Down to the Wire
MOSCOW (Sputnik) — All the leaders of the 28 member countries of the European Union seek to reach a deal that would guarantee the United Kingdom's continued membership of the bloc, a UK Labour member of the European Parliament told Sputnik Friday.

“All the parties, all the 28 leaders, are clearly willing to make a deal which will be a guarantee to keep the union together,” Afzal Khann said.

On February 18-19, EU leaders are meeting in Brussels to discuss the issue of the United Kingdom’s membership in the European Union, among other issues. Discussions went late into the night on Thursday, and are expected to continue on Friday.

European Council President Donald Tusk acknowledged “some progress” last night, but stressed that “a lot still remains to be done.”

Khann voiced hope the sides could reach a deal sooner than later as “uncertainty is not helpful for the EU, or the UK.”

UK Prime Minister Cameron put forward four key proposals he would like to introduce for the United Kingdom to remain in the bloc — shifting power away from EU authorities back to the UK national legislature, exempting Britain from the EU "superstate" principle, removing the euro's single official EU currency status, and protecting the British economy by keeping eurozone members away from non-eurozone countries’ affairs.
