Nelle Harper Lee was a well-known American novelist. She was born in Monroeville on April 28, 1926. In 1949 she moved to New York, where she begun a writing career.
Harper Lee won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961 for the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". The novel was inspired by the racist attitudes she observed as a child in her hometown.

The plot of the book was adapted as a movie in 1962. The movie is considered by many critics as one of the best ever made.
Harper Lee suffered a stroke in 2007. After recovering she returned to her hometown where she spent the last years of her life.
