The military used a Sukhoi Su-27 fighter aircraft as a mock target.
"Upon the entry of the aircraft into the SMD's area of engagement, the military base's air defense weapons were put on high alert…. Once the target had been identified, unit military personnel simulated the destruction of the target using S-300 and Osa-AKM air defense systems," the SDM's statement reads.
The Russian military base in Abkhazia is based at the former Bombora Soviet military airfield, located close to the city of Gudauta on the Black Sea coast. It was formed following the 2008 five-day war between Georgia and Russia triggered by a Georgian military offensive against the breakaway republics of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Both regions declared independence from Georgia in the early 1990s. Their statehood was officially recognized by Russia following the conflict.
