MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is considering conducting new arrests at the FIFA congress to be held on February 26, media reported on Sunday.
According to FBI sources of The Mail on Sunday, the bureau is "cognisant" that 209 FIFA associations will send their highest officials to Zurich which would provide the best opportunity for action.
FIFA has been mired in a corruption scandal since early 2015. In May, several high-ranking FIFA officials were arrested in Zurich on corruption charges. Long-standing FIFA President Joseph Blatter, who was reelected for the fifth term, on June 2 announced his resignation.
FIFA is scheduled to elect a new president on February 26. The candidates for the post are Asian Football Confederation chief Salman bin Ibrahim Khalifa, FIFA Vice-President Prince Ali bin Hussein of Jordan, Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) General Secretary Gianni Infantino, and former FIFA executive Jerome Champagne.
