After sexual assaults against women on New Year's Eve in Cologne, the process of alienation against German Chancellor Angela Merkel has become rapid, with many complaining that Merkel had underestimated the extent of the criticism among the German population and lost contact with reality.
According to the newspaper, Merkel is still talking of solutions that have long been rejected by most German and European politicians. However, the wave of rejection regarding her policy of open borders is not the main problem for the Chancellor. The most worrying issue is that such policy may lead to the disintegration of the EU, in general, a trend that can already be seen in the case of the UK.
"The state of lawlessness with regard to uncontrolled immigration and the resulting security risks have brought the British Minister of Labour to vote against the membership of his country in the EU. It was hardly difficult for the EU opponents and Euro-skeptics in the United Kingdom to launch a corresponding fear campaign to incite [people] against the EU," the newspaper wrote.
"The step was made out of serious irritation with Germany, because since January 1 Germany has started to send back economic migrants back to Austria."
Thus, taking into account her recent isolation, Merkel may lose her job as Chancellor in the near future. According to the newspaper, Merkel "has survived many storms" and could to reinterpret her failure as a "good result". But the degree of her current isolation raises questions about her ability to lead the country and causes "panic" among members of the ruling coalition, DWN concluded.
