WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Romania will acquire two advanced TPS-77 radars with digital array transceivers that use less energy and last longer than earlier versions, US defense giant Lockheed Martin announced in a press release on Monday.
"Like all next-generation radars made by Lockheed Martin, the company is planning to include innovative new Digital Array Row Transceivers (DART), which led to energy efficiency and greater performance for the Lockheed Martin suite of radars," the release stated.
Since 1995, Lockheed has supplied Romania with more than two dozen ground based radars that are used for air surveillance and weather forecasting, according to the release.
The latest technology allows high-power amplifiers to consume much less power, extending the radar’s useful life up to 40 years with lower maintenance costs, the release noted.
