BEIRUT/MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Monday, Moscow and Washington announced an agreement on cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad and the armed opposition factions had been reached. The agreement will come into force on February 27.
"The Syrian Arab Republic declares its agreement to cease hostilities, while continuing the fight against Daesh [Arabic for IS], the Nusra Front and other terrorist organizations under the framework of the Russian-US statement," the statement reads.
Damascus also expressed its readiness to continue its coordination with Russia to determine the areas and armed groups that fall under the ceasefire deal.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with the country’s government fighting numerous opposition factions and jihadist groups.
