"It's not under consideration and we've said that many times," Earnest stated in response to queries that Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio said the Obama administration was considering turning over the naval base to Cuba.
The US detention center at Guantanamo Bay that houses suspected terrorists is located on the naval base complex.
Following the administration’s announcement, Rubio suggested that Cuba was already "ripping the American people off and now it’s demanding the return of a US naval station."
On Tuesday, the Obama administration laid out a plan which detailed how it planned to close the infamous detention center at Guantanamo Bay. President Barack Obama argued that the existence of the facility hurts US interests, and that closing the facility would save the US some $335 million over ten years.
