ROME (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, WikiLeaks published a batch of classified documents detailing the NSA bugging world leaders, including Berlusconi. Later in the day, the Italian Foreign Ministry summoned US Ambassador John Phillips to clarify the issue.
Her move was supported by the lawmakers of Berlusconi's Forza Italia party and by the leader of Italy's Lega Nord party, Matteo Salvini.
"The wiretapping of the government of a country allied to the Unites States is unacceptable for us. In this regard, urgent clarification is needed," Maria Elena Boschi said.
According to WikiLeaks, the NSA had bugged meetings between UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Berlusconi, as well as talks of key EU and Japanese trade ministers.
