HOUSTON (Sputnik) — Gas supplies to Ukraine depend on American exporters because the US government does not get involved in the work of the markets, US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz told Sputnik on the margins of the IHS CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, Texas.
"We do not determine the markets, we are the government," Moniz said on Wednesday, when asked when the United States will provide gas to Ukraine to decrease the country's reliance on Russian companies.
Moniz declined to comment whether the US government intends to support the companies that would export gas to Ukraine.
In June 2015, US Senator John McCain said the United States would be able to supply gas to Ukraine within two years.
