MOSCOW (Sputnik) – "The evidence at trial failed to show that public safety will be advanced in any significant way by the removal of the ability to lawfully and safely continue to personally produce medical cannabis," Judge Michael L. Phelan wrote in the Wednesday decision, as quoted by The New York Times.
The ruling is based on a legal challenge brought by four medical marijuana users.
The patients that initiated the Federal Court case argued that the requirements denied them access to certain effective strains of marijuana.
The Canadian government now has six months to come up with a new system of cannabis home-growing regulations, according to Judge Michael Phelan’s decision.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to legalize recreational marijuana during his election campaign, but has not fulfilled his promise yet.
Canada is among the countries with the least restrictive laws on marijuana.
