CAIRO (Sputnik) – On Monday, Russia and the United States announced an agreement on the cessation of hostilities between the Syrian government and armed opposition factions in the country. The agreement is set to come into force on February 27.
"The truce itself may be an additional incentive for a political settlement in Syria, but the parties should sit down at the negotiating table. We need a political solution, a military solution cannot be," Khalidi told RIA Novosti.
The best option for Syria is for the ceasefire to be observed, while there is continued pressure from the international community to advance the negotiation process between the government and the opposition, Khalidi added.
The Syrian government and the main opposition faction have both expressed support for the US-Russian ceasefire proposal. The initiative does not include Daesh and al-Nusra Front terrorists.
