UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The situation in Syria’s capital Damascus and in the southwestern city of Deraa (Daraa) was calm after a ceasefire came into force in the conflict-torn country at midnight on Saturday, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said.
De Mistura said that Deraa and Damascus had "calmed down," according to information he received right after the cessation of hostilities began, but added that there were other unconfirmed reports of possible violations that could be provocations of either side in the conflict.
The UN special envoy did not give any details on the possible ceasefire breaches, but said that the reports were being investigated. He added that provocations are likely as they are part of any ceasefire agreement.
On February 22, Russia and the United States reached an agreement on the ceasefire in Syria. The ceasefire took effect at midnight on February 27, Damascus time. It does not apply to terrorist groups operating in the country.
The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing the Russia-US agreement on the cessation of hostilities in Syria on Friday, demanding that all parties strictly comply with the agreement.
