32-year-old man was arrested two years ago as he tried to board a plane from Frankfurt to Turkey. It was believed that he was traveling to Syria to join Daesh and engage in terrorist activities, what prosecutors called “serious subversive violence.”
However, Frankfurt’s state court has said it is “overburdened” with a backlog of cases and, therefore, can’t hear the case. A spokesperson for the court told German news agency DPA, “The court is doing other things at the moment."
As a result, the man was freed, though he was ordered to report to police three times every week while the investigation continues.
Prosecutors blasted the court blasted the decision, calling the reasoning “insufficient” for releasing the man without holding him. However, the court responded by saying that, while the court went through its backlog, it would be unfair to hold him for such a stretch of time without properly trying him.
