Recently elected FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Sunday denied allegation he promised the United States the right to host 2026 World Cup in exchange for support of his candidacy.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Friday, Extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich elected Infantino new president of the organization. US Soccer Federation head Sunil Gulati supported Infantino in the second round of the vote.

"No, certainly not," Infantino said answering whether he promised Gulati the right to host the tournament as quoted by the BBC.

Infantino added that he spoke with many delegates to the congress "trying to tell them that they should vote for football and for me."

General Secretary of the UEFA Infantino received 115 votes in the second voting round, while Bahrain's Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation, came in second with 88 votes.

Infantino will not serve a full term, but will assume ousted previous president Joseph Blatter's term, which was to expire in 2019.
