The citizens of Switzerland have rejected in a nationwide referendum the right-wing initiative to expel foreign nationals in case they break the country's law in practically any way, including minor offenses, the country’s government said Sunday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The initiative was proposed by the anti-immigration Swiss People’s Party, currently having the most seats among all parties presented in the National Council taking into consideration the fact that foreigners constitute almost one-quarter of the country's population.

"The initiative was declined by 58 percent of the votes," André Simonazzi, Spokesman for the Swiss Government, stated at a press conference

Only 4 in 10 Swiss Citizens Support Foreigners' Expulsion Initiative
Earlier in the day, a press officer with the Swiss gfs.bern pollster told Sputnik that the preliminary number of Swiss citizens, who support the controversial proposal on expulsion of foreign nationals in case they break the country's law, stood at 41 percent and was not expected to change significantly.

Over five million people were eligible to vote in Switzerland, while some two million foreigners living in the country could not take part in the referendum.
