CAIRO (Sputnik) – The operation took place south of the Bedouin town of Sheikh Zuweid on the Israeli border, according to the Akhbar Masr news portal.
The outlet reports the camp belonged to the Ansar Bait Maqdis jihadist group affiliated with the Islamic State, a terrorist organization banned in a number of countries including Russia.
Maqdis emerged after the 2011 Egyptian revolution, which forced former President Hosni Mubarak out of power after an over 30-year rule. The militants aim to topple the Egyptian government.
Cairo has been conducting anti-terrorist operations in North Sinai for the last two years amid an Islamist insurgency in the peninsula.
