STOCKHOLM (Sputnik) — The previous record was set in 2014, with 278 contenders vying for the prize.

The 2016 longlist includes 228 individual candidates and 148 organizations. Last year, the award went to the National Dialogue Quartet for helping Tunisia’s transit to democracy during the so-called Jasmine Revolution in 2011.

The Committee is not allowed to divulge the names of nominees. Access to information about any year’s candidates and their nominators can only be given after at least 50 years have passed.
