KHABAROVSK (Sputnik) – Russian troops with the Eastern Military District (EMD) will hold training launches of a range of surface-to-air missile systems in the Far East, the EMD’s spokesman said Tuesday.

“The active phase of tactical exercises with combat missile launches are scheduled to start in Telemba [Republic of Buryatia],” Col. Alexander Gordeyev told reporters.

He said that among the air defense systems to be deployed there are S-300; Osa; Strela-10; the Pantsir-S surface-to-air missile and anti-aircraft artillery weapon system; and the Shilka self-propelled radar-guided anti-aircraft weapon system.

“For the first time here, the latest SAM Tor-M2U combat firing will be held in late March,” Gordeyev added. Advanced Tor-M2U systems entered into force with the district in Primorsky Territory in 2014.

The spokesman added that over 1,500 troops have been trained and will take part in the active phase of the drills. The troops have so far executed combat duty tasks, carried out deploying and loading duties of combat vehicles, as well as searching, tracking and identifying air targets.
