MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russian top diplomat Sergei Lavrov discussed Tuesday in Geneva the human rights situation in Ukraine and the Baltic countries with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR), Zeid Ra'ad Hussein, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov, Ban Ki-moon Discuss Syria Truce, Fight Against Terrorism - Moscow
Eastern Ukraine has been suffering from a crisis triggered by a military operation launched by Kiev authorities against local militias in April 2014. The latter have refused to recognize the pro-Western government in Kiev that came to power in 2014 in what they consider to have been a coup.

At present, Donbas remains a zone of a frozen conflict, with continuing casualties among both civilians and military personnel. According to recent UN data, at least 9,098 people have been killed and another 20,732 wounded during the conflict in Ukraine.

Earlier, Moscow repeatedly raised concern about mass statelessness and the infringement of rights of the Russian-speaking population in the Baltic countries.
