MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Poland considers introducing border controls in July, when the country will host World Youth Day and the NATO summit, Poland’s Foreign Minister Witold Waszczykowski said Wednesday.
"The situation seems to be under control, however it is difficult to predict how it will develop over the next four to five months, for example if another wave of refugees hits Europe. In response to some of these challenges, some countries will continue to try to close their borders or introduce tighter controls… We are considered introducing these controls [in July]," Waszczykowski said in a statement.
Europe has been beset by a refugee crisis, with hundreds of thousands of undocumented migrants fleeing their home countries in the Middle East and North Africa to escape violence and poverty. A number of EU states have erected border fences and imposed restrictions, which have drastically cut the flow of migrants through their territories.
According to Norwegian Refugee Council, the closing of the national borders of EU member states and the imposition of new stricter border controls may result in large refugee camps appearing all over Europe.
