MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Following a series of terrorist attacks in Paris that claimed the lives of 130 people in November, Stockholm increased the threat level in the country.
"I have made an overall assessment, and decided on a return to the elevated threat level that previously applied in Sweden, since the autumn of 2010. We are thus going from Level 4 (high) to Level 3 (elevated) on the five-level scale," Director General of the Security Service Anders Thornberg was quoted as saying in a statement published on the service's website.
The decision was based on data from the National Centre for Terrorist Threat Assessment. According to the body, Sweden is regarded as a "legitimate" but not prioritized target for terrorist attacks by Islamists.
The threat level remains elevated, the risk that individuals could commit terror attacks in the country persists, the service said.
