UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — US plans to deploy its anti-ballistic missile defense system to South Korea can undermine the peace process in the peninsula, China’s UN envoy Jieyi Liu said Wednesday.
"This will weaken strategic security of China and other countries in the region… as well as deal a major blow to efforts of the international community to find a peaceful solution to the Korean issue," Liu said at the UN Security Council.
Jieyi Liu also said that Beijing supported efforts to denuclearize the Korean peninsula. This comes after the UN Security Council voted for a tougher resolution against North Korea.
The resolution expanded international sanctions against firms and people. It also banned imports related to missile and space programs. The measure came in response to Pyongyang’s alleged nuclear tests.
