MOSCOW (Sputnik) – In recent weeks, the number of refugees at the migrant camp in the French port city of Calais has decreased, the French president noted.
The operation to dismantle the sprawling "Jungle" tent camp began on Monday after the go-ahead from a local court. Authorities estimate that the southern part of the camp housed between 800 and 1,000 migrants.
In protest, desperate asylum seekers set their shelters on fire late on Tuesday to protest the ongoing demolition of the shanty settlement.
"We monitor these youngsters and we have clarified this with the British prime minister. When these young people have a family tie in the United Kingdom, they should return to Britain quickly and efficiently… It must be even faster and more efficiently," Hollande stated at a joint conference with UK Prime Minister David Cameron.
