Those who recently declared the Hezbollah movement a terrorist group damaged the unity and security of Lebanon, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Thursday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — On Wednesday, the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council, comprising Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait, officially added Hezbollah, and all groups affiliated to it, to its so-called list of terrorist organizations.

“Referring to Hezbollah, the most influential resistance movement, as a terrorist group, and ignoring the Zionist regime’s crimes is a new mistake that is not in the interest of regional stability and security,” Amir Abdollahian said, as quoted by the Tasnim news agency.

Syria Slams GCC’s Move to Call Hezbollah Terrorist Group
Iran’s intention is to back “the national unity, security, and stability of Lebanon, and support solidarity among all Lebanese groups,” the diplomat said.

Hezbollah, a paramilitary and political organization grounded in Lebanon's Shiite population, was established in the 1980s. The group has been fighting alongside the Syrian government against extremist militant groups since 2011.

Hezbollah is considered a terrorist organization by a number of countries including Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and many European states, but not by Russia.
