WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The rally became a forum for Trump to respond to a speech by Romney earlier in the day in which he warned that a Trump-led trade war would raise prices for consumers, kill export jobs and cause entrepreneurs and businesses to flee the United States.
"If I’m losing $505 billion with China, if I’m losing $58 billion a year with Mexico in terms of [trade] deficits, what do I want with that kind of trade, ruin it," Trump told a campaign rally in the US state of Maine. "Who needs that kind of trade?"
Mexico posted a $58 billion trade deficit in 2015, as Trump stated. However China’s trade shortfall of $366 billion was less than the figure cited by Trump, according to the US Census Bureau.
Trump has often said that high tariffs targeting imports from countries with huge trade shortfalls such as China and Mexico will force companies to move production to the United States and prevent US companies from moving overseas.
The video, entitled "Mitt Romney Not Conservative" and uploaded to the campaign’s Facebook page, highlighted instances in which the two-time presidential loser supported policies typically espoused by liberal Democrats.
In a collection of clips from throughout his political career, the Trump video shows Romney supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants, Obamacare and abortion, positions he later abandoned to run for president of the United States.
