WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Work will be performed in Manassas, Virginia; Indianapolis, Indiana; Tucson, Arizona; and Ventura, California, with an expected completion date of September 2018, the Defense Department stated.
"Aurora Flight Sciences, Manassas, Virginia, has been awarded an $89.4 million… contract for Phases II and III of the vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) X-plane research portfolio," the statement said on Thursday.
In March 2014, DARPA announced its goal of developing a vertical take-off and landing aircraft that can achieve a sustained top speed of 300 to 400 knots (555 to 740 km/hour).
