Additionally, Cruz has also been called the winner of the Kansas caucuses happening today.
In Maine, with some five percent of the vote counted, Cruz received 48 percent, Trump's share in the vote was 35 percent, Rubio gained 8.6 percent, with Kasich given 7.4 percent.
Nearly 2,700 activists voted in the CPAC poll, organizers said. The average age of participants was only around 35 years-old, a young showing for this group.
The strong showing by Ted Cruz in the CPAC poll comes only hours after the Senator from Texas was booed while stage at CPAC. After making a joke about the lawsuits against the front-runner for the Republican nomination, Donald Trump, a number of attendees in the audience chanted "Trump! Trump! Trump!"
However, at least for today, Cruz seems to have the last laugh with a clear win among the most active staunch conservatives. Cruz remains a distant second in the actual race for the nomination having only won four states — including Kansas — to Trump's seven. The count before Kansas had Trump at 329 to Cruz's 231.
