"Donald Trump, Marine Le Pen or Geert Wilders [the leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom] — all these right-wing populists are not only a threat to peace and social cohesion, but also for the economic development," Gabriel told the Welt an Sonntag.
According to Gabriel, right-wing populists promise their followers "a fairytale world," where the economy develops only within the limits of their own nation.
"But never in the history economies could develop into a self-imposed isolation," Gabriel added.
Trump opposes international trade agreements that have been heavily promoted by the White House, because they ship jobs overseas and harm the US working and middle class.
Trump has also often said that high tariffs targeting imports from countries with huge trade shortfalls such as China and Mexico would force companies to move production to the United States and prevent US companies from moving overseas.
At the moment, Trump is the Republicans' frontrunner in the US presidential race.
