EU Turns Blind Eye to Turkey Media Freedom Restrictions Amid Refugee Crisis
BRUSSELS (Sputnik) Hollande's words come after a Turkish court ordered on Friday the Feza Media Group, which owns several Turksih opposition newspapers, to be placed under the management of government trustees. The move resulted in mass protest in Istanbul. On Saturday, Turkish police used tear gas, water cannons and plastic bullets to disperse the protests.

"Cooperation with Turkey does not mean that we accept everything in Turkey. Particularly, we should be very vigilant… toward some measures taken in Turkey, including the ones related to the press. The press should be free everywhere, including in Turkey," Hollande told reporters prior to the beginning of the EU-Turkey summit addressing the migration crisis.

He added that at the same time cooperation with Ankara was essential to solve the ongoing migrant crisis.

Earlier in the day, a diplomatic source told RIA Novosti that Brussels turned a blind eye to Ankara restricting media freedom in Turkey over the migration issue.

On March 7, Brussels hosts the EU-Turkey joint summit aimed at addressing the ongoing refugee crisis Europe is struggling to cope with.
