Flynn, now 23, detailed how, after being adopted from the orphanage, life was wonderful for about three months.
“I was given a few months to enjoy my new life, and after that he invited me to the bedroom,” Denis Flynn told reporters. “It got to the point where it was every morning, every afternoon, every evening.”
Denis said his adopted father, Ralph Flynn, 71, sexually molested him and forced him to perform oral sex acts. When he turned 15, his adopted mother Carolyn Flynn, 47, joined in the abuses.
"That was my first time. That was a mind trip as well. I lost my virginity to my mom,” he stated. The abuse continued until he was 19. “For a long time, they told me what they did was right, what they did was out of love,” he said.
Police reports show that Denis attempted suicide multiple times during the years of his abuse, reporting the crimes to a psychologist in 2012, who then passed the information to the local sheriff’s office.
"I want people to know that what they did to me was wrong," Flynn said. "I would like any other victims listening to this to know that they did nothing wrong. They have a voice. Hopefully I can inspire some inner courage to speak out."
The couple was arrested in November 2015, and Ralph was charged with 44 counts relating to the molestation, including incest, sexual abuse of a child, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, and lewd and lascivious acts on a child. Carolyn was charged with 21 counts of a similar nature.
The couple also have a biological son, though Denis is unsure whether he also faced abuse at his parents’ hands.
The mother is free on $525,000 bond, while the father remains at the Elmwood Correctional Complex with a $2.5 million bail. A gag order has been put in place on the case, and neither of the parents has entered a plea.
Along with the criminal case, Denis Flynn is also suing in civil court for undisclosed damages.
"Everything they own," the young man’s attorney, Richard Alexander, told the Mercury News, "constructively belongs to the young man."
