MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia's Prosecutor General's Office said Thursday it had requested a ban on a US government-sponsored non-profit organization on the territory of the Russian Federation as its activities pose a threat to national security.
"As a result of an investigation on the basis of received documents, the Prosecutor General's Office has decided to deem the activities of foreign non-governmental organization National Democratic Institute for International Affairs [NDI] on the territory of Russia as undesirable," the Prosecutor General's Office said in a statement.
A proposal to put the NDI on the list of foreign NGO's banned in Russia has been sent to the Justice Ministry, the statement said.
The NDI receives financial support from the United States Congress, the US State Department and the US Agency for International Development, as well as from approximately 35 other countries, multilateral institutions and foundations, according to NDI's website.
