UN human rights chief Zeid Raad Hussein on Thursday described the seizure of opposition newspaper Zaman by Turkish authorities as the latest in a series of government attacks on free media.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Last Friday, the Turkish government seized the Zaman Media Group, which includes Today's Zaman newspaper, following a court action linked to national security. Days after the takeover, the daily started publishing pro-government articles.

"Last weekend's action by the Turkish authorities against the daily Zaman newspaper is the latest in a series of very worrying developments regarding media freedoms and freedom of expression," Zeid Raad Hussein said in a speech at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The UN high commissioner for human rights vowed to continue "to follow closely issues of freedom of expression and media freedoms" in Turkey after several court cases against Turkish journalists.

Last month, the UN rights commissioner expressed concern about what he said was an alarming number of journalists and other media operatives convicted or awaiting trials in Turkey. He said that anti-terrorism legislation should not be used as a means to curtail freedom of expression.
