LONDON (Sputnik) — On March 2, UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said that Russia was the only world power that would welcome a British exit from the bloc.
"We’d like the British people to know that those pronouncements have nothing to do with Russia’s policy. As a matter of fact, our government doesn’t have any opinion on Britain’s place in the EU… It is for the British to decide. We’ll accept any outcome," the statement reads.
The Russian embassy also expressed an opinion that the UK government was interested in unstable bilateral relations with Moscow by involving it in the domestic Brexit debate.
British nationals are due to vote on June 23 in a referendum after Prime Minister David Cameron and the other 27 EU leaders reached a deal in February to grant London special status within the bloc.
